How to immigrate with your Pet from South Africa to Mauritius.
Bringing your pet with you to Mauritius from South Africa involves complex paperwork and there are many rules and regulations. PETport is here to make the process easier for both you and your pet!
MICROCHIPPING AND VACCINATIONS
To be allowed entry into Mauritius, your pet must have an ISO 11784/11785 microchip, along with a non-encrypted, 15 digit identification number. The microchip number will need to be referred to on all documentation.
Your pet must be up to date on its Rabies vaccination. There are different Rabies vaccine requirements for dogs and cats:
Dogs
Your dog must have had a Rabies vaccine when it was a minimum of 3 months old and the vaccine must have been administered at least 6 months before entering Mauritius, but no longer than 12 months prior.
Cats
Cats must be vaccinated against Rabies when a minimum of 3 months old and the vaccine should be valid between 2 months and 12 months before entering the country.
BLOOD TESTS
Your pet must be accompanied by a Rabies Titer test form by a recognized and approved lab stating that it has had a neutralizing antibody titration test. The lab form must clearly identify your pet and include its microchip number.
DOCUMENTATION FOR IMPORT TO MAURITIUS
Two important documents are required for your pet’s entry into Mauritius:
Import Permit
You will need to apply for your pet’s import permit 3 to 6 months before the travel date and you must clearly state the reason for your pet entering Mauritius.
Health Certificate
A valid health certificate is also needed and this must state that your pet is fit and healthy to travel, include the microchip number and be endorsed by a qualified vet.
QUARANTINE IN MAURITIUS
As long as your pet meets all the health and documentation requirements, it will be allowed entry into Mauritius and will need to quarantined for a minimum of 5 days.
FAQ
Most frequent questions and answers
Pets are well looked after on a plane. They are placed in a comfortable carrier and travel in a heated section in the hold. All efforts are made by PETport and the handling crew to ensure that your pet is as secure and comfortable as possible.
Pets have a way of “hunkering down” during an anxious experience. Once the plane’s lights have been dimmed, your pet will likely be soothed by the hum of the plane and will be able to go to sleep.
If you would like to use a calming product, Calmeze tablets work well for dogs, while the gel is recommended for cats.
The cost will depend on the size of your pet, date of travel and airline used. It is actually more affordable than you think! Contact us today for an accurate quote!
Your pet will be cared for well by professionals during the quarantine period. They will have a comfortable place to stay and will be given fresh food and water at all times. Rest assured, your pet’s best interests are taken into account at all times.
Each pet differs, of course, but generally speaking, Mauritius has similar weather to South Africa and your pet should settle in very well with very little adaption issues.
Most dogs and cats are allowed to enter Mauritius but there are some exceptions.
All dogs and cats require a Rabies vaccination that must be administered when they are at least 3 months old, so younger animals will not be allowed into the country.
