Rabies is a vaccine-preventable, zoonotic, viral disease. Once clinical symptoms appear, rabies is virtually 100% fatal.
World Rabies Day is the 28th of September and aims to raise awareness about the impact of rabies on humans and animals, provide information and advice on preventing the disease in at-risk communities, and support advocacy for increased efforts in rabies control.
What is so special about the 28th of September?
28th September marks the anniversary of Louis Pasteur’s death, the French chemist and microbiologist who developed the first rabies vaccine.
What can we do as a community?
- Support your local SPCA in their efforts.
- Vaccinate your fur family ANNUALLY!
- Educate your family, teach your kids to interact, and be friendly with animals but to protect themselves.
- When helping strays or wildlife, first report to the local authorities. If an interaction occurs, wash any scratches immediately with warm soapy water, and seek medical assistance.
